Private Lives

Private Lives by Noel Coward

Directed by Bernard Godwin

  1. Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences.

Full of razor-sharp wit and quick-fire dialogue, Private Lives is Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring stage comedy. Extraordinarily written in only three days, Private Lives originally opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 to packed houses. Since then, this charming comedy of manners has retained its remarkable appeal, captivating audiences all over the world.

Cast List

Peter Hunter - Large part

Peter is the lead character around which the whole story hangs. He needs to be energetic and have good stamina as he is on stage for virtually the entire play. Ideally a younger man 20s to early 30s

Frances Hunter - Large part

Peter’s wife. Similarly energetic, and also a large part. The actress should be happy to appear in limited clothing onstage. Ideally a younger lady 20s to early 30s

Brian Runnicles - Large part

Nervous and geeky character. Slightly put upon character, but a large amount of work to do on stage. Ideally 20s to mid 40s

Eleanor Hunter - Large part

Peter’s mother. She is elegant and snobby character, and clearly resents Frances for marrying her son. Lots of stage time having digs and pokes at Frances, and quietly stealing several scenes. Playing character mid 50’s upwards……can easily be played by a younger lady though from 40 up

Leslie Bromhead - medium size part

Peter’s boss. Appears at first to be an ogre, but we see him mellow a lot. He has an eye for the ladies and takes no time to start chatting up Peter’s mother. Ideally a man in his 40’s upwards

Superintendant Paul - medium size part

This character is the stock policeman character, but finds himself in several awkward situations. Can easily be injected with wit and enthusiasm. Ideal for an actor wanting a smaller part.  Age is not important, but great character acting is!!

Mr Needham - medium size part

This character arrives in act 2 only, and similarly to Mr Bromhead, he appears standoffish at first, but he later gets into all sorts of fun. Actor needs to be comfortable appearing semi naked on stage, and have the 2 ladies all over him at certain points….age unimportant

Susan - smaller part

Susan is a prostitute. She can be played by any lady who wants to have fun and expand her part by acting up on stage, and making the most of her time on stage (Act 2 only)

Barbara - non speaking smaller part

Barbara is also a prostitute. Don’t be put off by her non speaking role. She has a lot of fun with Mr Needham, and although the part is small, she will steal the show for sure (act 2 only). She can be played by any lady who really wants to get stuck in to her role, and create lots of comedy with her body language and her actions on stage

Delivery person - small part

Small part with limited lines. Can be played by any man or woman. Comes on at various points in the play. Perfect for anyone wanting to have a small involvement on stage, and help out more backstage?
